Tips for Speeding Up Your Metabolism

Welcome back :) I hope you all had a lovely weekend and learned a little- or at least paid closer attention to your habits this go around- I know I did!! I didn't have any drunken fast food- and I saved my money by buying cheaper mixers and better food earlier in the week- trying to keep that going.

I'd like to talk about something today that a lot of people tend to forget about- which can help SO MUCH.
Help with what, you ask?  STAYING SKINNY.  And that, my friends... is metabolism.
This vital little piece of our diet is so important and is also so overlooked.  So many habits and foods alike can raise or lower our metabolism- and we might not even know!

For starters, stay hydrated.  Water does more for our bodies than you think it does.  Without being fully hydrated, we can't metabolize our food to its fullest potential.  Don't drink sugary drinks to get water, just go for straight up H2O.. and you can't go wrong.  Drink a glass before a meal, and not only will you eat less, but you will start metabolizing sooner!!
Next, get exercise.. this may be an obvious one, but do you know why?? Muscle burns calories faster than fat, so increase your muscle mass, and increase your metabolism!  They suggest exercising before eating, so it burns off faster! (definitely changing my routine)

Increase your FIBER and PROTEIN intake.. they are difficult for our bodies to digest, meaning that it works harder to burn it off (aka a higher rate of metabolism).  Some foods that are rich in protein are turkey, chicken, fish and egg whites.  As far as fiber goes, stick to spinach, broccoli, oatmeal and nuts.

5 THINGS TO NEVER EAT.. if possible:
1. Orange Juice
2. Artificial sweeteners
3. Whole Wheat bread
4. Butter
5. SoyMilk

Just a little something to think about next time you go to the store.  Check out labels! Do a little research and then go!

Last Weekend- 1.. Me- 0

Alright, I know I'm not alone in saying that "last weekend kicked my ass".  We all have our weak moments, and well.. last weekend was one of mine.  I ate out twice, drank more than I probably should have, and skipped the gym.  GO ME.  NO.. I must find a solution.
We're all guilty of this every once and a while.. right??
Well here is what I'm thinking we should do... it just takes a little determination and hard work, along with buying the right food and drink at our local Walmart and getting our butts out of bed on Saturday morning to run any mistakes we made the night before.. OFF.

Let's start with Friday.. YAY. It's finally here, let's party.. right?  Okay, okay, keep your pants on.  We have at least 50 hours worth of weekend time (including sleep.. which we will take advantage of) to scoop up, so hang tight.  I personally don't have classes on Fridays (second semester senior perks!) so I am ready for action come 3:00pm Friday afternoon.  WOAH. 3:00pm???? You're right.. I can work out before I gain it all back in one night.  --hint-- this is where workout #1 comes in.. DON'T SKIP OUT JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE EXCITED FOR THE WEEKEND. you still consume calories-if not more than usual- during the weekend. If anything, we need to workout HARDER on these days.

Okay, whew! Made it through a workout.  Time to take an alcohol run- Walmart here I come, I'm broke and can't afford to go to the nicer liquor store down 4th street.  THINK WISELY.  Every shot of alcohol is AT LEAST 130 calories... do you really want to mix that with OJ or Dr. Pepper?? Especially when you know you drink more than a couple drinks a night.. that can add up to a whole day's worth of cals.. good thing you hit that gym-or did you? So let's be smart, and go with a diet soda at least, if not these cool new things by Crystal Light- Margarita and Mojito flavored powders- ONLY 5 CALS A SERVING!! and delish!

We all know after a fun night of hanging out at the bar or (shoutout time) at the Beta Theta Pi house, we love to come home and munch on a little (or should I say, a lot) of greasy something or others. Typically we find that sober driver to hit up McDonalds or Taco Bell... but what if we bought our food that we just HAVE TO HAVE at the store during the week- stock up on food before we go out, save money, and at least some calories.  I like to buy the $2 pizzas, or burritos, but one time, I made my boyfriend and I a turkey melt- who knew a turkey sandwich would taste good on a Friday night!! Throw some low fat ranch, hot sauce (which actually speeds up metabolism) or my new thing, Sweet Chili sauce- sorry McDonalds, mine is cheaper!!! This way, we save gas money, spending money, AND we're not consuming pointless calories that will soon turn into fat as we snore our way to the afternoon on Saturday.

Now that we're not greased down from head to toe from what we ate the night before, I can almost guarantee you will wake up feeling at least somewhat better.  Not weighed down by fries and tacos, we can actually move.  Maybe motivate ourselves to get to the gym or take a jog outside.  I know, I know, there is usually ZERO motivation to get up off the couch and get those feet moving, but if you want to go out again on Saturday night, I highly suggest finding motivation.  I like to turn on some music (that I'd run to) or check out some new Nike's online that I could picture myself running in, and that gets me going.  I try to rehydrate (you'd be amazed at how dehydrated a typical college student is on a given Saturday) and that'll help your mood, too.  Talk yourself into cleaning your room, and that'll get you going too.  Turn off the Food Network (I know, I'm a sucker, too) and get your butt in gear- it'll be well worth it!

Do this one weekend, let me know how it goes... and I think you'll find success.  I write these things partly because I try them, too. So I'll let you know how this weekend differs from last, because I need a change!

Remember to keep that penny jar going.. Spring Break is coming soon!! 3 weeks, 2 days (for me anyway!!)
